What Can Students Do to Stop Coal

Students form across the country are taking action to stop global warming, help activists in Appalachia, and stop additional coal plants by organizing on campus.  Over 4,000 students attended "Power Shift 2007”  which inspired, engaged and empowered a generation of young people to create a fresh, positive and inspiring vision of the future, a future focused on our potential to overcome the challenges of the 21st century, build a clean energy economy, and achieve energy independence.

Since that time, over 12 states have had meetings on campuses to discuss how to take action on their campuses and in their states.  http://reenergizetexas.org/, http://itsgettinghotinhere.org/

Many of the statewide groups are working to get their campuses to adopt the campus climate challenge. The challenge asks campuses to adopt goals to reduce global warming gasses by 80% by 2050, reduce energy use and to ask their local government to do the same.  The challenge unites 42 organizations and over 601 local groups in 56 states and provinces. Together they have worked to pass 100’s of local and regional climate policies. http://climatechallenge.org/about

Educate Your Campus – HOUSE PARTY time!!!

Who on campus doesn’t like a party?  Hold House Parties – invite friends and teachers to watch Burning The Future: Coal in America and discuss the broader issues.  Then challenge them all to host their own House Parties, and so on.  Through an expanding campus network, you can build an audience for a Coal Impact Seminar and we can help you invite speakers and panelists to engage in debate, answer questions, discuss solutions – maybe even screen the film.  Go to www.burningthefuture.com and contact us for more information.
