The Economics of Coal

The push for more coal plants comes down to economics – the market’s failure to appropriately price the costs of coal generation borne by the public at large, the mistaken belief that coal generation is cheaper than the alternatives, and the ability of political influence by powerful corporate interests to distort policy decisions to the point that they aren’t just weighted towards the corporate interest but are bad for the public welfare and don’t even make economic sense.
